Many dishwasher breakdowns are caused by events that are easily avoided. One of the most common causes is broken glass getting into the pump and causing the unit to stop working. It is important to carefully stack your dishwasher, and resist the temptation to put “just one more” glass or plate in. Many expensive wineglasses are better off rinsed under the tap.

Remember the new dishwashers of today have to comply with strict water efficiency regulations. This usually means that they try to use the least amount of water possible, and many companies have come up with clever ways of ensuring a clean wash with minimal water. However, this depends to a large degree on the condition of the items put into the dishwasher. It is always a good idea to rinse plates etc and remove all loose food. If your machine is not draining the water, check the filter in the bottom of the machine, and also the drain hose, especially where it is connected to the “S” bend of your sink.
